Cytoplasm and Organelles The cytoplasm consists of the cell contents between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Suspended in the cytosol, the fluid cytoplasmic material, are many small structures called organelles (literally, small organs ). The organelles are the metabolic machinery of the cell, and they are highly organized to carry out specific functions for the cell as a whole. The cytoplasmic organelles include the ribosomes, smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, mitochondria, cytoskeletal elements, and centrioles.
