The Tell-Tale Heart ” by Edgar Allan Poe is about this narrator that expresses how he is triggered by this old man’s eye. Throughout the story, the narrator has a strong desire to kill this old man due to the man’s pale blue eyes. The narrator stalks the old man for seven nights, observing him with the anticipation of murdering him. Eventually, on the eighth night, the narrator was being very cautious and stood still for a whole hour then ended up killing the old man. After the narrator murders the old man, he examines his body to make sure he is dead by checking his pulse, then he amputates his head, arms, and leg. He hides the body under his floorboards by lifting three planks. He made sure he didn’t leave any blood stains or any indicators that a murder had just been committed. After he had cleaned everything up, he got a knock on the door from three police officers, he welcomed them in with confidence with a guilt-free mindset. As he sat with the police officers, he was hearing sounds of heartbeats and it slowly increased which was driving him with a feeling of guilt. As the sound increases, he confesses to the officers his crime and tells them to tear up the planks to demonstrate the body. My overall impression was that this was unexpected because in the beginning after the crime was committed, he demonstrated self-confidence within himself and to the police officers as if he didn’t do anything wrong but as he sat with the officers his guilt started to kick him causing him to confess his crime to the officers. 2.The narrator’s external conflict was between him and the old man. He had a problem with the man’s eye but not the person himself. He states I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture –a pale blue eye, with a film over it. He developed a fear of the old man’s eye and created this strong desire to get rid of it. The narrator’s internal conflict was him trying to convince himself that killing the old man was the right thing to do to solve his fear of the old man’s eye. The narrator was observing the old man for a whole week before murdering him. After killing him he explains There was no pulsation. He was stone dead. His eve would trouble me no more. This demonstrates how he believed that murdering him was the only way to solve his fear of the old man’s eye. 3.Based on the narrator’s description of the old man’s eye and detailed emotional statements throughout the story, I believe that he does suffer from schizophrenia because at the beginning of the story he developed a fear/anxiety of the old man’s eye thinking it was an evil eye . He experiences hallucinations throughout the story. After killing the old man, he believed that this was the only way to solve the issue that he had with the old man’s eye which demonstrates the symptom of illogical thinking. He even made sure he was dead by checking his pulse and had a short-term relief feeling afterward. After that, he started hearing the old man’s heartbeats when it would’ve been impossible to hear since he was killed which demonstrates the auditory hallucination he has built up by his guilt kicking in. The yard is dull and gloomy and is situated adjacent to the dark side of the old brick home where the old ivy flourished. The environment is cold and dreary as it is taken place during Winter. Historical Context: The historical event that took place during this period was the rapid increase of European immigrants to New York. Overcrowding in the country led to different diseases. The story draws on the concern of the Pneumonia disease taking over the lives of Washington. The pneumonia disease was deadly in that day and age being the leading cause of death. He created a fake leaf and hung it on the tree to ignite Johnsy and give her more hope. This shows the superstitious association of her fate with that of the final ivy leaf on the vine, which will inevitably fall. There is a sense of hopelessness for both Johnsy and Behrman. Through their bond Johnsy magically sees hope where she was once hopeless. Similarly, Behrman was failing at his passion to create art and lost his hope. He longed to create a masterpiece, which he was able to through his selfless act of sacrifice. When Johnsy notices that the leaf that is meant to determine her fate is not falling, she is given new hope. Johnsy s uplifting spirit can be depicted when speaking to Sue, she stated Something has made that last leaf stay there to show me how wicked I was. It is a sin to want to die.
